Free Images
One of the key tasks we have as 21st Century Educators is to educate our students about Intellectual Property Rights. They are in a world where everything is available at the click of a button. Its an instant world with instant gratification.
To often we see our students (and our staff) grab content particularly images and use these without recognition for the publisher or artist. How many of them consider whether or not the content has been copywritten?
I am always pleased to receive requests for people to use any of my resources and I am yet to refuse. When I have requested permission to use other peoples resources and materials they have, without fail, agreed. There are a number of resources available that allow us and our students to legitimately access royalty free images, rather than the classic http://images.google.com search. We need to encourage our students to be selective and ethical in the sources of their images rather than using generic searches which do not respect copyright.
A recent blog post, By Laura Milligan, on 100 (Legal) Sources for Free Stock Images provides 100 links to stock images. This is a brilliant resource and one I will be using and encouraging my students to use appropriately.
Here is a sample:
“ 1. FreeFoto: FreeFoto.com claims to be “the largest collection of free photographs on the Internet.” They’re available for offline projects as well, as long as you’re not using them to make a profit.
2. KAVEWALL: Look for images and textures in unique categories like tattoo, smoke, and food.
3. Digital Dreamer: Free, royalty-free stock images can be found here.
