MYSA – summary

Well I am back from the MYSA conference. The conference as an excellent Middle years conference and a good ICT conference. I am very pleased that the 10 year drought that has afflicted Brisbane has broken, but if I am honest I wish it could have broken after my visit.

For me the Keypoints were:
1. Visit to University of Queensland was a  highlight – the innovative learning spaces we saw have stimulated many conversations and I would expect to see this filter through.

This is a 2nd year common roomThis is a 2nd year common room. Lots of small workspaces , lots of computers and screens.

These two images look at the AXE – a experimental leacture hall. The students workstations are a tablet/stylus based wacom screen. The stacking of levels means that there can be collaboration between the groups.

The hall has the new standard for presentations of three projection systems. These are:

  1. presentation screen
  2. internet media screen
  3. visualiser (IWB)

Interesting. The AXE had a smartboard on a plasma screen which was then projected onto the visualiser screen.
2. Keynote speaker  – Judith Baenan on Adolescents -  a very well recieved and enjopyable Keynote and workshop with excellent insights into the development process of adolescents and the behaviour that corresponds with this. The linkage to Physical development was missing but was easy to make. The second session on the crucial connection between school and families was an excellent and stimulating session.
3. Prof Phillip Long’s Spaces that inspire. Professor Long hosted us as we toured UQ on Wednesday and his session was very useful . A very good speaker with a clear messages about the development of learning spaces that are flexible, adaptable and usable. http://www.uq.edu.au/nextgenerationlearningspace/presentations
