It always concerns me when I hear that educators are even considering giving up a controlled educational network in favor of some sort of model that involves the onus shifted to the students. It’s naive to think that educators are in a position to know what a child does on their device. ICT professionals managing a controlled network have a difficult enough time, educators who only have a passing familiarity with ICT will have no chance of knowing what a child is doing. A child with free access to the on an unmonitored connection is a total abrogation of duty of care please inform yourself about proxies, deep net or even spend some time on 4chan to find out why a strictly controlled educational environment is the only truly safe option for anyone with a sense of duty of care. We have a controlled educational ICT environment for the same reason we don’t hold lessons on a Friday night at kings cross and say well we’ll just shift the onus of responsibility onto the students.

A very clear overview of what many schools are facing and it will be interesting to see how it is dealt with. Unfortunately, there is little or no guidance from our education department in this issue so we are pretty much left to come up with our best response. I have discussed this issue with colleagues and the concern is always about how the less ICT savvy cope. The kids are well ahead in so many ways and it is a constant challenge to adapt and accomodate the new arrangements
