Open Office 3.0

I know its been out for a while, but it never ceases to amaze me. This is a collaborative open source project. It produces a fully functional suite of productivity tools that are a match in many ways for professional suites, but best of all its free.
I have just started to update my copy from [...]

Tools for the trenches

I have long been an advocate of Free and open source software (FOSS). There are an amazing array of tools and technologies available to use from a dedicated community of enthusiasts. I applaud these people as they have done much to enable my teaching.
But while I wholeheartedly applaud them, I must also lament the situation [...]

Two websites to visit

Here are two websites that I have come across that are really quite useful.
Freesoftwaregenius – http://www.freewaregenius.com/

This site does reviews of free and open source software (FOSS). The reviews are good and detailed and there is a rich variety of tools reviewed. A good software source.
Fontstruct – http://fontstruct.fontshop.com/

Their motto Build, Share, Download fonts. This is a [...]

Microsoft and FOSS

Microsoft and FOSS (Free or Open Source Software) would often be regarded as mutually exclusive or perhaps a contradiction in terms, but occassionally you would be very wrong. Here are two examples that are interesting:
The first is MARVIN – http://www.marvin.com.au/
Marvin is a development from the agents (einstien and co) in MS apps. Developed by an [...]

Some of the applications we already know like:
Wordpress –
But there are some other that are very interseting including 2 project management tools.
dotproject – Open Source Project and Task Management [...]

NECC Vol 4 – the story so far..

Well day one went well. The open source lab was interesting – I attended a session using Blender a 3D image and animation tool. A good session, a little to big for really good learning but it was a good taster and one I will follow up on.

I continue to be impressed [...]

Sharepoint alternative

In one of my last blogs I looked at alternative tools to those supplied to schools.
In The Mirosoft deal, which provides state and integrated schools with Microsoft software, is the sharepoint client. Schools have to buy the sharepoint server or connect to a provider using sharepoint to be able to use this.
I was not aware [...]

Go Warrington

The Otago Daily Times reports on Saturday 21st June that “School opts for free Software”
The school has decided to stop using the ministry’s SMS (School Management Software) and it hope to be the first school “to exclusively use free ‘GNU/Linux’ software on school managment and classroom computers”
But the best thing about this statement is this. [...]

Waimarino Cluster Conference

Yesterday I had the privilage of attending and presenting at the Waimarino Cluster Conference, held at Bethlehem College in Tauranga. Overall I found the experience to be a positive one.
The evening before we had a very pleasant meal out with Richard, Sharon, Rocky, Allanah and Jamin. Having time to network with other enthusiasts is [...]
